In last month’s blog, we explored mould exposure and its potential impact on health. For many people, discovering mould in their home or workplace is the first step towards understanding why they have been struggling with chronic symptoms for months or even years. But mould itself is only part of the story.

One of the most important reasons mould can affect health so profoundly is because of substances known as mycotoxins.

If you are living with an autoimmune disease, wondering whether you may have one, or searching for answers about why your symptoms continue to flare despite your best efforts, understanding mycotoxins may provide another piece of the puzzle.

What Are Mycotoxins?

Mycotoxins are toxic compounds produced by certain species of mould. Think of them as biological chemicals that mould creates as a survival mechanism. While not every mould produces mycotoxins and not every mould exposure results in illness, some mycotoxins can have significant effects on human health.

Unlike visible mould, mycotoxins are microscopic. You cannot see them, smell them, or easily identify their presence without specialised testing. This means some people may continue to experience symptoms even after visible mould has been removed because the toxic compounds can linger in the environment and continue to affect the body.

If you have read much about autoimmune disease, you have likely heard that genetics play a role. This is certainly true, but genetics rarely tell the whole story.

Imagine trying to extinguish a fire while someone continues adding small pieces of wood to the flames. The fire may never fully go out because the source of irritation remains present. In a similar way, an ongoing environmental exposure may make it more difficult for the immune system to regain balance.

One of the challenges with mycotoxin-related illness is that symptoms can be incredibly broad and often overlap with other conditions. Fatigue, brain fog, headaches, joint pain, digestive issues, sinus congestion, poor sleep, anxiety, and skin problems are all commonly reported.

This is one reason why mould and mycotoxins can be overlooked. Many people spend years searching for answers because their symptoms seem unrelated or because they have been attributed solely to stress, ageing, or an existing autoimmune diagnosis.

Some individuals notice that symptoms worsen when they spend time in a particular building and improve when they leave. Others experience more subtle patterns that are only uncovered after taking a careful look at their health history and environmental exposures.

The Gut Connection

One of the most fascinating aspects of mycotoxin research involves the gut. This is especially important because so much of the immune system is closely connected to digestive health.

Certain mycotoxins appear capable of disrupting the intestinal barrier, altering the balance of beneficial bacteria, and increasing inflammation within the digestive tract. One question I hear frequently is, “If mould and mycotoxins are so common, why do some people become very ill while others seem unaffected?”

The answer is likely that no single factor determines how a person responds. Genetics may influence how efficiently the body processes toxins. Existing autoimmune disease, chronic infections, poor sleep, high stress levels, nutritional deficiencies, and overall toxic burden can all affect resilience.

I have often referred to health in terms of a bucket. Every stressor adds a little water to that bucket. Stress, infections, poor sleep, dietary challenges, environmental toxins, and unresolved inflammation all contribute. Eventually, the bucket becomes full and symptoms begin to appear.

For some people, mycotoxin exposure may be one of the factors that pushes them beyond their body’s ability to compensate.

Looking Beyond Symptom Management

One of the reasons I appreciate the functional medicine approach is that it asks different questions. Rather than focusing solely on suppressing symptoms, it seeks to understand why the immune system may be struggling in the first place.

This does not mean that mycotoxins are the cause of every autoimmune condition. Autoimmune disease is complex, and there is rarely a single trigger. However, it does mean recognising that environmental factors may be playing a role and deserve consideration as part of a broader investigation. And that is the whole premise behind the functional perspective. It’s not simply placing a bandaid on symptoms; it’s the whole endeavor of looking at all angles until a root cause is discovered and healing from the inside out can begin. For many patients, discovering and addressing previously overlooked contributors can be a significant turning point in their health journey.

Why Functional Medicine For Issues Like Mycotoxins And Autoimmunity?

When mycotoxin exposure is suspected, functional medicine aims to view the body as an interconnected system rather than a collection of isolated symptoms. Instead of looking only at the immune system, we may also explore gut health, nutrient status, detoxification pathways, sleep, stress, hormone balance, and environmental exposures.

The goal is not simply to determine whether mould is present. The goal is to understand how your body is responding and what may be preventing recovery. This allows for a more personalised plan that supports healing from multiple angles rather than relying on a single intervention.

These changes may seem simple, but they create a stronger foundation for healing.

Most importantly, do not feel that you need to navigate this process alone. Autoimmune disease is rarely straightforward, and finding the right support can make all the difference.
